Red On Bushcraft & Survival: Mission & Heritage
From the Jump Door to the Workshop: The “Red On” Story
In the world of the Paratrooper, “Red On” is the moment of ultimate focus. When that light hits red in the aircraft, you’re standing in a stick at the door—kit checked, heart racing, and mind locked on the mission. It is the razor’s edge between fear and action. You’re allowed to be scared, but you must master it, stay disciplined, and be ready to jump the instant the light turns green.
I’m Liam, and I founded Red On Bushcraft & Survival to bring that same mindset—prepared, committed, and elite—to the gear I create. As a former Paratrooper in both the British Army and the French Foreign Legion (2ème REP), I have spent my career relying on equipment that must perform in the most unforgiving environments on Earth. Today, I translate that “March or Die” discipline into handcrafted tools for the modern outdoorsman.
Handcrafted Survival Slings & Tactical Paracord Gear
My specialty lies in the fusion of ancient weaponry and modern durability. I am dedicated to the craft of Handmade Balearic Slings and Tactical Survival Slings, designed for those who value primitive skills and reliable EDC (Everyday Carry) equipment.
Every item in my shop is built with a focus on functional design and extreme durability. By using military-grade 550 Paracord and traditional weaving techniques, I ensure that my survival slings are not just historical replicas, but high-performance tools capable of launching projectiles with incredible distance and precision.
Built for the Serious Outdoorsman
Whether you are a bushcraft hobbyist, a primitive skills enthusiast, or a serious survivalist, you need gear that won’t fail when the conditions get rough. Beyond our signature paracord survival slings, I also specialize in:
Traditional Handcrafted Slingshots: Built from natural materials for an authentic feel and rugged performance.
Custom Paracord Weaving: Tailored solutions for utility, survival kits, and tactical aesthetics.
Field-Tested Bushcraft Tools: Gear designed by someone who has lived in the field, for those who live for the outdoors.
At Red On, I don’t just sell equipment; I provide a piece of my own experience. Every weave is tightened by hand and every design is scrutinized for quality.
Have a question about a custom build or a specific throwing style? I’m always ready to help. Reach out today and let’s get you kitted out with gear you can depend on.

History
The Legacy of the Balearic Slinger
The Balearic sling is more than just a tool—it is the ancient world’s most underestimated weapon. Hailing from the Gymnesian Islands (modern-day Mallorca and Menorca), these legendary skirmishers were the elite “artillery” of the Mediterranean.
The “Three-Sling” Tradition
A true Balearic slinger never went into battle with just one tool. From childhood, they were trained to master three distinct lengths for different tactical needs:
- The Headband: A short sling for close-range precision.
- The Belt: A mid-range sling worn around the waist.
- The Hand: A long-range sling kept ready for maximum distance.
While the ancients used esparto grass, animal sinew, and horsehair, our paracord versions replicate the exact physics and “split-pouch” geometry perfected by these warriors over two millennia ago.
“Invisible Death” on the Battlefield
In the hands of an expert, a sling projectile was nearly impossible to see in flight. While archers provided a visible arc of arrows, slingers delivered a flatter, faster trajectory.
- Range: Capable of reaching distances up to 400 meters—frequently outranging the composite bows of the era.
- Impact: Using glandes (lead bullets), they could shatter bone and dent bronze armor.
- The “Whir”: It’s said the only warning an enemy had was the low-pitched hum of the projectile before impact.
From Mercenaries to Legends
The Balearic slingers were the “special forces” of their day. They were the backbone of Hannibal’s Carthaginian army during the Punic Wars, famously terrorizing Roman legions. Eventually, their effectiveness was so respected that Rome integrated them into their own auxiliary forces.
Did you know? The name “Balearic” actually stems from the Greek word ballein , meaning “to throw.”
